Paint Bank Virginia...Land Of Buffalo and The Hairy Coo
Paint Bank Virginia...What kind of name is that? Who
cares? If you are up for a drive to the middle of nowhere, but when you get
there you are in a beautiful valley and very unique town then it will be well worth it.
Folks told us about Paint Bank back in late March. It sounded interesting and always up for a road trip our family decided to head on down there, or out there. Paint Bank is nestled in a valley northwest of Roanoke Virginia and includes a 7000 acre farm where they raise buffalo and highland beef. Paint Bank must be owned by one person or company. There's a General Store, the Swinging Bridge Restuarant, and the Depot Lodge there, and other than maybe one or two other buildings, including a renovated mill, that's about it. We took the scenic route out Interstate 64 to Covington and then south down some winding, but scenic road that crossed over a stream at least 20 times on our way there. At the back of the General Store is the Swinging Bridge Restaurant...yes it has a real swinging bridge inside of it. The restaurant is a cross between Cracker Barrel and a Cabella's store. Their speciality is locally raised buffalo and highland beef a.k.a the Hairy Coo. We sampled both and both were great. The General Store sells the buffalo and highland beef steaks, meat and burgers to take home with you...which we did of course. So if you feel like a scenic road trip with a stop for a unique dining experience, check out Paint Bank, VA. ![]() ![]() Oh! And don't forget a drive down the road to see the buffalo and the Hairy Coo up close and personal. BUT whatever you do, don't go near the buffalo. You will see a sign similar to this... ![]() |
