A Christian Thought On Term Life
Insurance
Trusting In The Complete
Sovereignty of God, While Being Wise and
Prudent At The Same Time.
Where I Am Coming From
I
am a follower of Christ who is also a licensed Life Insurance agent. As strange
as it may sound, I am not a fan of Life Insurance, or for that matter,
insurance in general...at least not in the way it currently operates. I believe
there is a better and more God-honoring way. You will learn more as you
continue to read. While I am not a big fan of insurance, until the church does its job, I am thankful for it in many ways and you should be too.
I
am also opposed to our current monetary system (banking, borrowing, lending,
investing and economics). Why am I opposed to it? Simple: God is opposed to it
and He calls it abominable.
"What
do you mean, God calls it abominable?" I mean this:
- Our current monetary
system is a pagan or secular system of money, not a biblical one.
- Our current monetary
system is based on fiat money. That means there's no material or hard
asset (like gold or silver) backing to all of our money. It's based on
credit and good faith.
- Because of Fractional Reserve
Banking or Lending, our current monetary system creates money out of thin
air. Our monetary system is based on debt and the creation of it. Money
that is loaned out does not come from bank or depositors' assets. It comes
from a few strokes of a computer keyboard. It is in reality legalized
counterfeiting.
- Our monetary system is
based on "false weights and false measures." God says: "Differing
weights and differing measures, Both of them are abominable to the LORD." -Proverbs 20:10. There are many other
verses that make known that God opposes false and unfair monetary systems.
Because God's Word speaks so strongly about the
wickedness of false and unfair monetary systems, it is right for Christians to
avoid such schemes whenever possible. Christians should surely not profit from such
systems or be in bondage to them...like so many are.
I
also believe Christians should be thoughtful and careful about insurance
products that involve all or part of the premiums being invested into a secular
system that is corrupt and unrighteous. This may include some Whole Life and Universal
Life policies. Insurance is not an investment!
Lastly,
this article is primarily written for men who have families and are the
God-ordained providers for their family. Single mothers can benefit from this article
information as well.
What The Bible Says About Life Insurance
The
bible says absolutely nothing about life insurance. But it does speak to other
things that pertain to the idea of buying life insurance. The most important
one being, who do you trust?
Trusting In The Sovereignty Of God
When
it comes to our life and the future provision for our family upon our death,
our ultimate trust is to be in the sovereignty of God and in Him alone. We
should never put our trust in anything else. Isaiah blasted the Israelites for
abandoning their trust in God. He said:
"Woe to the rebellious
children,' declares the LORD, ‘Who execute a plan, but not Mine, And make an
alliance, but not of My Spirit, In order to add sin to sin; Who proceed
down to Egypt without consulting Me, To take refuge in the safety of Pharaoh and
to seek shelter in the shadow of Egypt!" -Isaiah 30:1-2
Our
trust, faith and hope are in the Lord for our provision now...and for the
provision of our family in the future. Consider Jesus' Word's from the Sermon
On The Mount:
"No one can serve two
masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be
devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.
"For this reason I
say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your
body, as to what you will put
on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
"Look at the birds
of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
Are you not worth much more than they?
"And who of you by
being worried can add a single
hour to his life?
"And why are you
worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not
toil nor do they spin,
"Yet I say to you that
not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these.
"But if God so
clothes the grass of the field, which is alive
today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe
you? You of little faith!
"Do not worry then,
saying, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear for
clothing?'
"For the Gentiles
eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all
these things.
"But seek first His
kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
"So do not worry
about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble
of its own." -Matthew 6:24-34
Our
dependence for how our families' financial needs will be met if we pass away
should not be dependent upon an insurance policy or an insurance company. Our
dependence needs to be on God.
Ideally Why You Shouldn't Need Life
Insurance
You
shouldn't need life insurance for several reasons.
- Your children are
responsible: If you have
children that are old enough to provide and care for your wife (their
mother) and any other siblings, then they should be taught and encouraged
to do so, if and when that time comes. It is their responsibility first.
"Honor widows who are
widows indeed; but if any widow has children or grandchildren, they must first
learn to practice piety in regard to their own family and to make some return
to their parents; for this is acceptable in the sight of God." -1 Timothy 5:3-4
But if anyone does not
provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied
the faith and is worse than an unbeliever." -1 Timothy 5:8
- Your church is
responsible: If something
happens to you, then the church, the Body of Christ is responsible for
caring for your family's needs. This may involve financial aid, paying off
debt (which you should do everything you can now to eliminate...including
your mortgage), bringing your family into the home of another family and
providing work that does not take a wife and mother away from her
God-ordained role of being a worker at home and caring for and educating
her children.
"Now she who is a widow
indeed and who has been left alone, has fixed her hope on God and continues in
entreaties and prayers night and day."
-1 Timothy 5:5
"And all those who had
believed were together and had all things in common; and they began selling their property and
possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need." -Acts
2:44-45
- You are
responsible: If we are wise, we
will be building an inheritance for our children and our children's
children while we are still living. Our children's inheritance should come
from our labors (and teaching them to labor), good stewardship and wise
investing (Loot, Land & Livestock) not from an insurance company.
Self-insurance is the best form of insurance. There's no reason why your
wife can not develop an income from home without violating her
God-ordained role. Prepare her for this now.
"A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children." -Proverbs
13:22
"But if anyone does not
provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied
the faith and is worse than an unbeliever." -1 Timothy 5:8
- Another
man may be responsible: Lastly, and the hardest to accept, your
wife is free to remarry and unless God calls her not to, she should be
expected to do so.
"Therefore, I want younger widows to get married, bear children,
keep house, and give the enemy
no occasion for reproach." -1 Timothy 5:14
"Then Boaz said to the
elders and all the people, ‘You are witnesses today that I have bought from the
hand of Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech and all that belonged to Chilion
and Mahlon."
‘Moreover, I have
acquired Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of Mahlon, to be my wife in order to
raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance, so that the name of the
deceased will not be cut off from his brothers or from the court of his birth place; you are witnesses
today." -Ruth 4:9-10
Will I Be Unequally Yoked With
Unbelievers?
Another
serious concern is potentially being unequally yoked with unbelievers and
relying on a secular institution and unbelievers to cover you (and vice-versa)
in the event of your death. We have numerous verses that remind and command us to
avoid this, most notably:
Do not be bound together
with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or
what fellowship has light with darkness?
Or what harmony has
Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever?
Or what agreement has the
temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of
the living God; just as God said, "I WILL DWELL IN THEM AND WALK AMONG
THEM; AND I WILL BE THEIR GOD, AND THEY SHALL BE MY PEOPLE.
"Therefore, COME OUT
FROM THEIR MIDST AND BE SEPARATE," says the Lord. "AND DO NOT TOUCH
WHAT IS UNCLEAN; And I will welcome you. -2 Corinthians 6:14-17
It is important as followers of Christ, to give thoughtful and
prayerful consideration to the associations, alignments and agreements we make
with unbelievers (which that includes secular/pagan corporations).
We should always be careful of this and do all we can to avoid
supporting an overtly unrighteous individual or company. Right now, we are to
be in the world, but not of the world. But while we are in the world, we have
to deal with the world when it comes to personal and business matters. It is
nearly impossible not to support some secular person or corporation. After all,
every day we buy products from grocery stores, drug stores, convenience stores,
department stores, home centers, gas stations, restaurants and coffee shops. So
every day we are buying from and thereby supporting many different companies,
who for the most part are pagan and many do unrighteous deeds and/or support
unrighteous causes.
Odds are, if you own a car or a home, you have auto insurance and
homeowners insurance. What is the difference between receiving money from a
secular insurance company if you wreck your car or your house burns down? I see
no difference. Now, I do realize that some Christian groups, particularly the
Amish and Mennonites, do not have either auto or homeowners insurance. Of
course, the Amish (and some Mennonites) don't drive, so they wouldn't need it,
unless they wanted to insure their buggy. But most Mennonites do drive and many
of them abstain from auto insurance because their particular church or
conference will come together and provide the funds in the event of an
accident. Personally, I think this is the best way. I would encourage more
believers and churches to follow this model.
Will you be unequally yoked if you buy a term life insurance policy?
If you believe you are in partnership with an insurance company and you believe
that that insurance company commits ungodly acts (through practices, policies
or investments), then you could be unequally yoked. You have to determine that.
We must remember that when it comes to being unequally yoked we must concern
ourselves most with the following:
- Spiritual
Partnerships: Avoid working with unbelievers on spiritual matters
- Marriages:
Avoid marrying an unbeliever
- Business
Partnerships: Avoid owning a business with an unbeliever...whether it's 1%
or 50%.
- Borrowing/Lending
Partnerships: Avoid going into debt and bondage to an unbeliever.
Being Wise & Prudent
"A wise man will hear and increase in learning, and a man of
understanding will acquire wise counsel," -Proverbs 1:5
"
Every prudent man acts
with knowledge, but a fool displays folly." -Proverbs 13:16
"A prudent man sees evil and hides himself, the naive proceed and pay the penalty." -Proverbs 27:12
"A wise man is cautious and turns away from evil, but a fool is
arrogant and careless." -Proverbs 14:6
By
being wise and prudent, we have our hope fixed on God and we trust in Him alone
for the biblical means of providing for our widowed spouse. But, outside of our
trust in Him, we may not qualify for the conditions of someone who doesn't
require life insurance:
- Your children are not old
enough and/or financially stable enough to care for your wife and their
mother.
- You are not part of a
genuine body of believers that will truly cover you. Unfortunately, most
churches and professing Christians do not see and/or are unwilling to
fulfill their biblical duty of caring for your family upon your death.
They would much rather spend their money on buildings, salaries and
programs, instead of on the real needs of the body.
Churches (that means you and me) should be willing and
ready to care and provide for a widow and her family until her children are old
enough to take over or she remarries.
While many Amish and Mennonite churches are good at
this, unless you are part of a very special church, then you simply can not
count on them to care for your family. This of course should make you ask, "Why
am I part of such a church?" And, "Am I prepared to help care for a widow and
her family who is part of my church?"
- You have yet to set
aside an inheritance for your spouse and your children. This could be
because you are still young and simply haven't had enough time to
accumulate sufficient savings. You
have been unwise with your money or, you have recently become convicted of
the necessity of providing for your family's future. I am afraid that unwise
stewardship is the case for most of us, including myself. By the way, we
should be training our children, especially our sons, to not only be able
to provide well for their family when they get married, but to have some
inheritance or future provision set aside prior to marriage and having
children.
- While your wife is
free to remarry, in the Lord of course, you don't know now that she will.
If
you are one of the fortunate few who is able to sufficiently provide for your
wife and children upon your death without life insurance...Then PRAISE THE LORD!
If
it turns out that you are not prepared, other than some very good theological
basis for not having life insurance, you choose not to purchase life insurance,
please consider the potential burden you could be putting your wife and
children under because of your lack of forethought or care. And make sure you
pray often that God would truly protect and provide for them upon your death.
If
it turns out that you have yet to set aside an inheritance or means of
provision for your family upon your death and you truly believe you should set
up some sort of protection and provision, then you should be asking the next
question and moving forward quickly...for life is a vapor and you do not know the
day or hour you will take your last breath.
How Much Term Insurance Do You Need?
You
don't need enough to make your wife and children rich. That is not why you
purchase life insurance. You purchase life insurance (if your family is not
currently in a position to be provided for) to fill a financial need for a
fixed period of time. You should also be living frugally now and preparing your
family to do the same later. Most families can live comfortably on much less
than what they currently spend.
Most
insurance people will tell you that you need 7-9 times your income. This figure
is an estimate that may be way too much for some and insufficient for others.
I
would suggest you need enough to cover the following: - The cost for a modest
funeral and burial.
- All outstanding debt,
including your mortgage and medical bills. If the plan is for your spouse
to move and there's equity in the home, then you need to take that into
account. If you are upside down on your mortgage, you need to take that
into account as well. While you are still living, you should be abstaining
from debt and focusing on paying off as quickly as possible any debt that
you have.
- Your annual after-tax
income, minus any social security benefit, minus any savings you have,
minus your share of annual living expenses (food, clothing, car, etc.) for
a period of time until either:
- Your children are in
position to care for your wife. That could be 1 year or it could be 20+
years depending on the age of your children.
- Your wife remarries.
If she is still young (whatever you determine that to be), then she could
reasonably remarry within five years.
- If you do not have
children and your wife does not remarry, then you will need to consider
purchasing enough life insurance to cover her financial needs until her
death. She of course could provide an income or partial income for
herself by having her own business from home and since she would not have
the responsibility of caring for her children, she could take on a
part-time or full-time job that would be beneficial to her and pleasing
to the Lord. So you will need to estimate as best you can your wife's
life expectancy and her financial needs for that number of years to get a
good idea of how much you should purchase.
I
would not suggest taking into account any interest that would be earned on the
life insurance proceeds. Whatever interest or return on a Godly investment
(Loot, Land & Livestock) she may receive, would just be extra.
