Do We Stop Rendering To Caesar When We Disagree With Caesar?

This is not the first time that question has been asked. I've asked that question to myself many times and I am sure some of you have...especially of late. Do we have a firm biblical reason or answer to stand on? That is what I want to know.

I recently got one of R.C. Sroul Jr.'s Kingdom Notes asking the question:

With health care reform it seems our tax dollars will end up paying for abortions. Should we continue to pay taxes to Washington?

Before I go on, I do encourage you to go to his Website and sign-up for the Kingdom Notes, I think you will find them informative and thought provoking.

First I will post his answer and then give some thoughts myself on this.

Yes. The recent “passage” of health care reform has rightly raised concerns among Christians. We ought to object to this blatant assault on our liberties. We ought to remonstrate this seizure of so great a swath of the economy. We ought also to protest the use of tax dollars to pay for the greatest evil of our day, the wholesale slaughter of unborn children. All while paying our taxes.

One of the confusing results of the American notion of democracy, the claim of Lincoln that we have a government of the people, by the people, for the people, is that we misunderstand the nature of what is happening when the state taxes us, and when the state spends what it brings in. We tend to see Washington as a mere middle-man, a clearing house, a facilitator that pools my money with my neighbors, and then spends it on what my neighbor and I want it to be spent on. We so identify with the state that we think we are doing what they are doing, that we are guilty of what they are guilty of. No, we are tax-payers. They are tax-spenders.

Jesus faced a situation rather similar to our own. He lived under the reign of a rather rapacious and brutal regime. And there were also, in those days, good and pious people who despised Rome and her evil deeds. They suggested that perhaps godliness in that context meant not paying taxes. Jesus saw things differently, telling them to render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s (Matthew 22:21). Our job is to pay our taxes. Failure to do so will bring down God’s wrath on us. The state’s job, according to Romans 13, is to exercise the power of the sword, to punish evildoers. It is not God’s instrument of redistributing wealth, which health care reform does. It is certainly not God’s instrument to punish the unborn, which health care reform does. The failure of the state here will surely bring down God’s judgment upon them. My responsibility for the use of “my” tax money ends when it stops being “mine,” when I send it in to Washington.

Jesus, please remember, was well aware of the evil spending habits of the Roman empire. He knew, in fact, that within a matter of days Roman taxes would be spent to murder the innocent in a most gruesome manner. What those in Jesus’ hearing rendered unto Caesar would be spent to purchase wood, and nails, to pay soldiers who would scourge and mock the Lord of glory. “Pay your taxes” the Lord told them. “Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” If we Christians sincerely hope to change this country, if we truly wish to protect the littlest among us, the solution isn’t to keep more of our federal reserve notes. It is instead to stop rendering unto Caesar the things that bear God’s image- the children. Give Caesar your taxes. Stop giving him your children.

Perhaps to your surprise, I agree with his answer...as long as it pertains to taxes. The challenge is, Caesar wants everything from us, not just our money. Caesar also wants our "Lives, Fortunes and Sacred Honor." Let me give you some examples:
  1. Caesar wants our children in his government schools so that he can brainwash them and make them wards of the state.
  2. Caesar wants our wives working so that he can receive more tax revenue.
  3. Caesar wants our guns, because he believes they threaten him. When in reality, an obedient Christian would only use his guns for provision and personal or family protection (unless it's religious persecution, then we should be prepared not only to lay down our guns, but lay down our lives like the great martyrs before us). An obedient Christian would not take up arms against his country and repay evil with evil. A Christian militia is flat out unbiblical!
  4. Caesar wants our vote so that he can stay in power.
  5. Caesar wants our compliance and our will so that we will go right along with his wicked and deceptive ways.
  6. Caesar wants us employed by him and working alongside of him to help him accomplish his devious, abominable plans.
  7. Caesar may want to confiscate our gold and silver so that we will be totally financially dependent upon him in the event of some sort of economic or societal upheaval.
  8. And perhaps worst of all, he wants our sons fighting in his army for his unrighteous, unconstitutional and unbiblical causes.
THOUGHT: WHY IS IT CHRISTIAN HOMESCHOOL PARENTS HAVE AN ISSUE OF SENDING THEIR CHILDREN OFF TO CAESAR'S SCHOOLS, BUT DON'T THINK TWICE ABOUT SENDING THEM OFF TO JOIN CAESAR'S ARMY? THAT MAKES NO SENSE AT ALL!

I bet four years in the Caesar's military will alter their thinking and lifestyle far more than 12 years in Caesar's schools.

*If that last comment offends you, please forgive me. But I urge you to study the teachings and commandments of Christ. I see no scriptural defence for Christians being in the military. I would also encourage you to read the early church fathers and you will see that they totally opposed Christian involvement with the state.

Anyway, sorry about that, but felt it had to be said.

So the real question is not whether we render to Caesar or not, but what do we render to Caesar? Do we render our children to Caesar? "Forbid it almighty God!"

So if Caesar shows up on your doorstep and mandates that you start sending your children to public school, what do you do? Do you render to Caesar in this case?

Or if Caesar shows up and wants all of your guns and gold. Do you render to Caesar your guns (that you use for provision and personal/family protection) and your gold (that you use to store your wealth and provide a means of payment when no one takes a government currency anymore)?

WHAT DO YOU DO?
Are we to render to Caesar everything he wants?
Is there no border line for how far Caesar can tread on us?

If you have an answer, any answer, I want to hear it.
