Making Money For College

A friend e-mailed me today asking if I knew of any
work/employment that his son might be able to do to earn some money for
college next fall. Here's what I suggested. You may want to seriously
consider these if you are in the same position.
Here's his e-mail (edited for privacy).
"Chris,
I hope this finds you and your family well, basking in a marvelous celebration of the birth of our Lord, and anticipating walking closely with Him this coming year.
My son has just returned from an internship with the National Center for Family Integrated Churches (NCFIC), the group headed by Scott Brown in Wake Forest and who just put on the Sufficiency of Scripture conference. He is headed for college in the fall for two years to complete a bachelor's degree, and he needs college $.
Could you email or call me and let me know if you have any knowledge of work available for him? He is proficient in computers - Office, web sites and such, is good in manual labor, has quite a bit of experience in editing both written text and audio products, and obviously needs to work.
Thank you for any thoughts or assistance you could give us on this.
God's blessings."
My response
I don’t know of anything specific, but I can offer some ideas that might help.
Website or Blog: If he doesn’t already have one, have him put up a Website or blog that does several things:
- Lists his work experience…including his internship with NCFIC
- Have him get some testimonials from Scott Brown and others he has done work for and put them on the Website/Blog
- List his qualifications in different areas (computers, audio, manual labor, writing, etc.)
- Give some examples of his work in those different areas…Websites he has developed, things he has written or edited, things he has manually done, etc.)
- List his services (Website development, Computer work, Computer repair, editing/writing, audio, manual labor, etc.)
- Then have him start posting articles/reports about things he has experience in. Example: “How Even My Dad Can Build A Website And You Can Too!” The purpose of this is to demonstrate what he is good at and has knowledge in that others don’t but would like to have. He can write reviews or reports on audio products. With his Website or blog he can use Google Adsense and affiliate links to generate some revenue.
Craigslist is a great resource for finding work and finding business. He can:
- Put up a resume in the Resume section…I would suggest that his resume point to a Website/blog that he has about his experience.
- Put an ad in the Services section for doing different things. I would have a separate ad for each “specialty” that he has (computer work, web work, audio work, manual labor). He could use the Craigslist ad and his resume to point to his Website/blog. If he does this, he will have to update his ad and resume at 2-3 times per week, because as more ads come in, his goes lower. But it is not that difficult to do. You simply go in and delete your ad and then go right back in and you can re-post it without having to start all over. If he knows how to fix/repair/tweak computers, he could have an ad for that. “Affordable Computer Repair From Responsible College Student.”
- Have him check the Jobs section of Craigslist. **Warning: There are a lot of scams on there. Don’t ever send personal info like social security number, credit report, etc. to “employers.” If they offer an e-mail that is a Gmail address, there’s a good chance that it is a scam. But there are legit jobs.
